Responsible sourcing is becoming an essential priority in the construction industry, and the precast concrete drainage sector is leading the way through transparency, traceability, and local economic support. A key benchmark in this effort is the BES 6001 standard, which provides a robust framework for the responsible sourcing of construction products.

What is BES 6001?

BES 6001 is a certification scheme that assesses the responsible sourcing of materials used in construction products. It covers a wide range of factors, including environmental management, supply chain traceability, ethical labour practices, and the responsible use of raw materials. Manufacturers of precast concrete drainage products who achieve BES 6001 certification demonstrate a clear commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement.

Latest data from the MPA Precast sustainability report shows that in 2023 86% of production in the precast sector was covered by BES6001.

Local Materials, Local Impact

One of the major advantages of precast concrete drainage is its inherently local nature. The primary materials, such as aggregates, cement, and water, are typically sourced from within the UK. This reduces the need for long-distance transportation, lowering carbon emissions and supporting regional supply chains.

Sustainability report data shows that over 58% of reinforcement used in precast concrete was sourced from mills in the UK, with another 19% originating from steel mills in the European Union. The average delivery distance from factories to customers was only 108.8 km in 2023.

By contrast, many alternative drainage products, particularly those made from plastics, rely heavily on imported raw materials or finished goods. These imports often involve higher transportation impacts and less visibility into sourcing practices.

Supporting UK Jobs and Industry

Choosing precast concrete drainage products contributes directly to the UK economy. Local sourcing means local manufacturing, which in turn sustains skilled jobs across the country, from quarrying and material processing to manufacturing and logistics.

This localised production model strengthens domestic industry resilience and reduces dependence on global supply chains, which can be subject to disruption and variability in standards.

By choosing precast concrete, stakeholders are not only investing in durable and high-performance infrastructure but also supporting responsible sourcing, reducing environmental impact, and strengthening the UK economy.
